Wild Wings

Believe it or not, last week was my first time at Wild Wings! I know it opened a long time ago, but I went there for the first time! Boy, did I love it? I ordered the boneless chicken wings and I love the canjun flavour!

It’s only about $20 and it’s more than enough food for two people.  I’m obsessed with that place now.  If you are looking for a good place to eat, try Wild Wings!

Wedding Reception at Hart House in Toronto

On Saturday October 8th 2011 we had the privilege of DJing at Jacquie & Chris’ wedding at the Hart House in Toronto.

It was a small intimate reception and there were a lot of expectations to be met. The evening began with cocktails, which were followed by speeches and dancing. Since it was a small crowd it was important to make sure the guests were on the dance floor all night.

Here’s what Jacquie had to say about their experience with DJiZM Disc Jockey Services.

“Veneet really exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with (me being the bride and all). Excellent job, really professional and courteous, and was able to read the crowd well. The dance floor was packed all night! SUPER FUN WEDDING!!!”

Congratulations Jacquie and Chris!!

EVER CONSIDER A FOOD TRUCK AT YOUR WEDDING?

The menu and catering is probably one of the biggest decisions you would have to make when planning your wedding. There are lots of trends that come and go because everyone wants something unique on their special day.

Looking for something ‘different’ for your wedding day? Well, roll in the food truck! Yes – this is an emerging trend in Toronto. Food trucks have been popular in cities like New York and Los Angeles. But as the hype wares off south of the border, it is just starting to become popular among Canadians. It is still a little challenging to organize this in Toronto due to its strict regulations, but you can find many companies catering weddings outside of the GTA. This can be a part of your ceremony, your main menu at your reception or it could roll in late at night to replace the midnight buffets.

Below is a glimpse of some food truck companies that will cater for your special day.

1)      El Gastronomo Vagabundo (http://www.elgastro.com/)

–          Owned by Adam Hynam-Smith and Tamara Jensen, this is the first gourmet mobile food truck in Canada. You can find them serving up gourmet tacos, tapas, Southeast Asian cuisine and fresh salads.

2)      Smoke’s Poutinerie (http://smokespoutinerie.com/)

–          They are the first of its kind offering a vast menu of different kinds of poutine. They have put a twist on the traditional poutine and offer over 20 menu items and also leaving it up to your imagination and giving you the opportunity to create your own.

3)      Gorilla Cheese (http://gorillacheese.wordpress.com/)

–          Can you say “grilled” cheese?! They offer a variety of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, including dessert sandwiches.

4)      Bonfire Catering (http://www.bonfirecatering.com/)

–          Taking the food truck one step further, Bonfire Catering arrives in a full sized trailer; offering you a mobile pizza oven.

5)      Caplansky’s Delicatessen – Thundering Thelma (http://www.caplanskys.com/)

–          Looking to serve your guests food after your ceremony? Why not have Thundering Thelma cater your event and offer your guests a variety of deli sandwiches.

If you prefer something sweet, the next few mobile trucks would be great options.

1)      The Cupcake Diner (http://www.cupcakediner.ca/)

–  A mobile cupcake shop, what more can you ask for? They cater to many social gatherings including weddings and offer a vast array of flavours.

2)      Shriner’s Creek Kettle Popcorn (http://www.shrinerscreek.com/)

–          Planning a carnival themed wedding? If so, this would be the perfect food truck for you. Also from the Niagara region they offer a variety of sweet and savoury flavours to tickle everyone’s taste buds.

3)      Tiny Tom Donuts (http://www.tinytomdonuts.com/)

–          This is one of the things people look forward to when visiting the CNE in Toronto – mini donuts sold out of a truck. You can now have your guests raving about these donuts at your wedding.

4)      Mr. Iceberg (http://icecreamtrucks.ca/)

–          And now on to the most traditional food truck known to everyone – the ice cream truck. Their truck is available from March through October for your wedding reception.

For some a food truck at your reception may not seem very glamorous; but if you’re looking for that one thing to make your wedding day extra special or unique then the addition of a food truck to your menu will probably do the trick.

Paper or Paperless invites?

Times are changing and couples seem to be putting a twist on the traditional wedding invitation. While browsing online I came across an article about paperless wedding invitations, which instantly caught my attention. While evites have been popular for informal occasions such as birthdays or bridal and baby showers, I hadn’t heard much about electronic invitations for something more formal like a wedding. But this seems to be a growing trend among the modern, eco-friendly couples.

As with anything, paperless wedding invitations also come with its likes and dislikes. If you want to be in control of your creativity and be budget conscious and eco-friendly at the same time then paperless invitations are probably the way you want to go. There are many websites that offer modern designs, but also allow you to create your own. But these electronic invitations seem to be gaining popularity for three main reasons:

  • Time saving – no need to spend hours writing out invitations, envelopes, looking for addresses and licking stamps.
  • Budget friendly – no need to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy invitations, envelopes, RSVP cards, maps and postage.
  • Eco-friendly – no need to feel guilty about cutting down our precious trees.

Also, you don’t need to worry about invitations being lost in the mail or you don’t need to wait weeks for your guests to return their RSVPs because they can respond instantly with just the click of a button.

While these paperless invitations seem to be a God send for most, they may not be suitable for everyone. The biggest downside is that not everyone is tech savvy and may not be in touch with the electronic world. But like most couples who are going the paperless route, you can have some printed invitations to hand out to those guests you know you will not reach digitally.

If you are considering electronic invitations the three most popular websites to check out are Paperless Post, Glo and Greenvelope.

What time to start your wedding reception

Starting at 6pm or 8pm will make a price difference of approximately $200.00.  However, very few of our past clients have us start at 8pm and I’ll tell you why.

First off, it’s better to have the DJ arrive with their equipment before anyone arrives to test equipment and do sound checks.  Second it looks sloppy if the DJs are bringing in equipment while people are mingling or having dinner.  Lastly, usually the couple wants cocktail or dinner music for 6pm.  For these reasons, I recommend starting at 6pm

DJ 4 Elementary Schools!

The DJ/Entertainment that you hire for your elementary school dance is critical to it’s success. Students at the kindergarten through fifth grade level will not just dance, they need structured fun. What will your DJ do to insure that the students will have fun at their dance? Here are some considerations to think about as you plan your dance and look for your DJ.

How much experience does the DJ you are considering have doing Elementary School events?
Playing music and providing entertainment for kids between 5-10 years old is vastly different than providing entertainment at a wedding or high school function. I highly recommend going with someone who either specializes in this type of entertainment/music, or has at least five years of experience doing elementary level dances.

What will the DJ do to keep the kids focused and entertained?
At this age level, kids will become bored quickly, they need to be constantly entertained. Two words. Structured FUN. Look for a DJ who offers plenty of games and activities in addition to a good variety family oriented music. Organized structured fun is the ingredient of success at this level.

What kind of music do they play?
The K-5 grade level is sensitive both to parents and students. You will want a DJ that can adapt to playing music that will appeal to both crowds all while making sure the music is fun, energetic, clean, family friendly and fun!

Here is a typical list of the fun songs and games that can be played at your dance. Your DJ should be able to play most of these songs:

Cha Cha Slide
Cotton Eyed Joe
Who Let The Dogs Out?
YMCA
Limbo
Surfin Safari
Shout!
Follow The Leader
Hokey Pokey
Life Is A Highway
See You Again
Pumpin Up The Party
Mickey
Grease Megamix
Hand Jive
Twist
Wipeout

These songs are a mere sample of what should be able to be played. I cannot stress enough the importance of hiring someone with experience on this type of event. The DJ should be able to mix games and interaction throughout the event along with a wide variety of music. Other considerations include the use of props in their show.

Students at the elementary level love things like:

Potato Sacks
Bubble Machines
Hula Hoops
Glow Bracelets/Necklaces
Blow Up Instruments
Hats

Get references from past events and other schools. Call them and get their input on the entertainment you are considering. Ask lots of questions. You should also make sure they go over the entertainment contract and/or agreement with you, before putting down a deposit and retaining the DJ you are looking for. Planning a school dance can be tough, choose the right DJ, and your event will go smoothly from beginning to end.
