Wedding at the Old Mill Inn

As you may already know, the Old Mill Inn, is located at 21 Old Mill Road in Toronto, just off of Bloor Street, West.

It it some what hard to find but once you are there, you’ll know you’re there.  One thing I didn’t like about the venue is the parking.  If you get there late it’ll be hard to find parking.  I think they are currently expanding the parking lot so hopefully this dilemma will be resolved soon.

The view from the outside is nice and the garden is properly landscaped.  The inside has nice paint and décor.  It is  modern, stylish and up-scale.  The good thing about this venue for us at least is that there is more than one room inside – we can be playing in more than one room.  We can DJ for one client for their wedding and another client in another room for a Birthday Party for example.

Also, once you are inside the room(s) you can’t really hear the music from the other rooms.  From the hallways you can hear the music from inside of the room.  I know when I was dj’ing Julia & Kevin’s wedding I was able to hear my music from the hallway and I knew others could too because I saw people peaking in that were really excited!

If you are considering having a wedding or event at the Old Mill Inn, I would recommend it because the service is really good.  The staff is really friendly and supportive.  The food is on time and people know what they are doing.  The staff are not kids, they are adults and know how to treat people well – they know how to serve food and they are prompt.

I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite place to DJ, but that’s just me being too honest.  I find the rooms to be small so it’s more for smaller weddings.  I liked how the venue provided a podium and a microphone – that saved me the hassle and saved Julia & Kevin some money.

Photo Booths At Your Wedding: How to Make Sure It Does Not Steal Your DJ’s Thunder

Over the past couple of years, photo booths have gained popularity at wedding receptions. It provides great entertainment for the guests and also gives them a unique and memorable souvenir. As much as it is fun and entertaining for the guests, it may tend to draw the attention away from other entertainment such as the DJ. See below for some tips that will help your guests enjoy both types of entertainment.

Location is the key to making both the DJ and photo booth work. If you will be having a photo booth try your best to keep the photo booth in the same room as the dance floor. This will prevent the crowd from being split up and leaving the dance floor empty. If you have the DJ and the photo booth in the same room your guests will be able to enjoy both types of entertainment.

Timing may also be a factor. You may want the photo booth there only during cocktails and the first half of the reception or you may want it set up for most of the night. If it will be set up for most of the night make sure you co-ordinate with your DJ so that he is aware and will be able to keep the crowd dancing and enjoying accordingly.

If you find your guests are lining up at the photo booth and it’s clearing out the dance floor, suggest that your DJ make an announcement about the timings of the photo booth. This will encourage your guests to go back to the dance floor, while ensuring they will have plenty of time to have a turn at the photo booth.

You should make sure you speak with your DJ to make sure he has a good playlist and is able to read the crowd to make sure your guests are being entertained. The DJ’s focus should not be to keep the dance floor packed all night, instead to make sure the crowd is enjoying the music and having a good time. It can be very difficult to keep a dance floor full at a wedding for a number of reasons. This however does not necessarily mean that your guests are not enjoying themselves. If the music is good you may find your guests dancing everywhere.

Your guests will definitely love the idea of a photo booth, just make sure you co-ordinate everything accordingly to ensure your other entertainment is not left hanging because the photo booth is taking away all of their attention.

Toronto Entrepreneur’s Conference 2012

As an entrepreneur and a business owner, I decided to attend this conference which took place in Mississauga at the Living Arts Centre.  I was hesitant to go as things are quite busy at this time of the year for me.

It was a good turn out with a lot of exhibitors and a lot of entrepreneurs like me. I was able to network and meet a cool lady named Andrea who works at Smartbrides.  It’s a website that sells used wedding stuff.

It’s always good to network – you never know who you will network.  I also met with Terry from Scotia Entertainment and also got a free massage from Theresa (The touch 10).

I took some notes and tried to win some prizes but no luck.

The Detail Pros

Based on the title, you are probably wondering who or what the ‘the detail pro’ is/are.

Yesterday, I received a flyer at my door for car detailing and that’s what they are – car cleaning company.  They clean cars inside and out and do an amazing job -usually.  I went to them today to get my engine cleaned.  I think a lot of people are scared to do this but I love getting my car cleaned.  I wish I can show you how my engine looks now!

-Brand new condition..ok well not really but still good!

If you are looking to get your car cleaned this summer, check them out!

They are located in Brampton – Kennedy/Clarence.

Trillium Health Centre

This past week we had the privilege and opportunity to DJ for Trillium Health Centre, a large hospital organization.

This past week was Nurse week so the health centre organized a dinner and awards night followed by a dance.

This event took place at Le Treport Wedding and Convention Centre in Mississauga.  This was my first time playing at an event there but I look forward to booking more events at that hall.

I really enjoyed dj’ing for this group – everyone was on the dance-floor and the dance-floor was huge.  We bought our lighting even though we didn’t have to.  It just makes the venue look so much better with lighting.

Also, believe it or not, this was a last minute gig – we put everything together in a day!

We spoke to Sarah who was really pretty helpful and we were able to coordinate things.  I helped her organize the event and I overcame a lot of hurdles or obstacles.

I also supplied the equipment – sound speakers for the dance.

Wild Wings

Believe it or not, last week was my first time at Wild Wings! I know it opened a long time ago, but I went there for the first time! Boy, did I love it? I ordered the boneless chicken wings and I love the canjun flavour!

It’s only about $20 and it’s more than enough food for two people.  I’m obsessed with that place now.  If you are looking for a good place to eat, try Wild Wings!

Paper or Paperless invites?

Times are changing and couples seem to be putting a twist on the traditional wedding invitation. While browsing online I came across an article about paperless wedding invitations, which instantly caught my attention. While evites have been popular for informal occasions such as birthdays or bridal and baby showers, I hadn’t heard much about electronic invitations for something more formal like a wedding. But this seems to be a growing trend among the modern, eco-friendly couples.

As with anything, paperless wedding invitations also come with its likes and dislikes. If you want to be in control of your creativity and be budget conscious and eco-friendly at the same time then paperless invitations are probably the way you want to go. There are many websites that offer modern designs, but also allow you to create your own. But these electronic invitations seem to be gaining popularity for three main reasons:

  • Time saving – no need to spend hours writing out invitations, envelopes, looking for addresses and licking stamps.
  • Budget friendly – no need to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy invitations, envelopes, RSVP cards, maps and postage.
  • Eco-friendly – no need to feel guilty about cutting down our precious trees.

Also, you don’t need to worry about invitations being lost in the mail or you don’t need to wait weeks for your guests to return their RSVPs because they can respond instantly with just the click of a button.

While these paperless invitations seem to be a God send for most, they may not be suitable for everyone. The biggest downside is that not everyone is tech savvy and may not be in touch with the electronic world. But like most couples who are going the paperless route, you can have some printed invitations to hand out to those guests you know you will not reach digitally.

If you are considering electronic invitations the three most popular websites to check out are Paperless Post, Glo and Greenvelope.

What time to start your wedding reception

Starting at 6pm or 8pm will make a price difference of approximately $200.00.  However, very few of our past clients have us start at 8pm and I’ll tell you why.

First off, it’s better to have the DJ arrive with their equipment before anyone arrives to test equipment and do sound checks.  Second it looks sloppy if the DJs are bringing in equipment while people are mingling or having dinner.  Lastly, usually the couple wants cocktail or dinner music for 6pm.  For these reasons, I recommend starting at 6pm
